“The state of being physically sound and healthy, especially as the result of exercise and proper nutrition”. That is the definition of fitness given by the dictionary. Sounds pretty simple, but surprisingly enough the United States has had quite a problem in being physically fit.
In 1957 President Eisenhower realized that the Nation was not as good in shape as it should have been. Ironically, the nation’s decline in good physical fitness was powered by the country’s fast growing progress. Because cities were growing and taking so much space, children could not very well play outside. And because of the television they rarely felt it a need to go out anyway. So what did President Eisenhower do, you might ask? He created a President’s Council on Youth Fitness, which was headed by Vice-president Richard Nixon. This council made schools and communities provide a little more opportunities for organized sports and safe outdoor play.
From then on, the United States’ fitness level has increasingly gone up. Many people can be seen walking, running, and even biking on a regular basis. Gyms have become a normal hangout and wellness centers, hospital run health clubs, are also visited daily. As a matter of fact, these hospital run fitness centers are more popular than gyms. They give their patients strong incentives, keep them healthy, and limit the costly medical procedures they might have.
Everything in this paper so far has been dealing with health, but more importantly, exercise. Exercise has been around for quite some time because really, exercise is possible no matter what condition you are in.
But exercise, now, has been perceived as a way to lose weight. Not a way to keep your fitness level up or a way of maintaining good health. People now-a-days want exercise to solve their problems with obesity in an instant. Of course, that’s not possible. Exercise needs to be done on a regular basis in order for someone to see a result.
This brings me to my next point. Obesity in kids. An important part of their life is fitness. But it’s the lack of it. The problem may not be that they eat so much. The problem can and most likely is that they eat poorly and are not active enough. This can and most likely will become a problem because our future would be one full of obese and physically unfit adults. For this problem many people hire personal fitness trainers. These trainers help the kids in many ways.
They help these kids lose weight and keep it off. They teach them the principles of sports and nutrition. And they also learn basic physiology and biomechanics hat help teens and kids. But these trainers require a salary so how much easier would it be to just have parents teach their children the importance of good nutrition and fitness?
But kids are not the only ones who need help in keeping their fitness up. Most Americans in general have a problem. So for this problem we tried to find and easy way out. As we, America does most of the time. Easy ways to “lose weight” and get buff started popping out all over the place. Some were promises on how you could “lose weight in an instant”, or “guaranteed fat reducers”. A clean colon was also being in the works. “Your sore muscles would be soothed away by relaxation”. “Particleboard discs can burn your calories!” And last but not least the most pleasantly sounding one of all. A promise for a “doubled strength, an improvement in your health, and a lengthening in your life”. Now doesn’t that all just sound great? Of course with these quick, easy ways of getting so healthy and keeping up on your fitness, there was always that small voice in everyone’s head saying, “So does it all really work?” And that became the breaking point for all of these “quick and easy” inventions. Dr. Lawton’s “Guaranteed Fat Reducer” was nothing but a round slab of soft rubber with a metal handle that was supposed to rub your body fat away. The “Relaxacizor” was a little gizmo that with its contact pads would send shocks to your body therefore ridding you of any sore. Sounds relaxing, doesn’t it? Jumping into a hot tub would be the more preferred thing to do. And the one that promised “doubled strength, great health, and long life” was just a collection of pulleys, ropes and chains attached by handles and straps to a bowling ball size weight. This thing just lifted the person up while he or she just sat there. As you can see the United States was looking for ways to rid the country from its misery in the fitness department.
We should all just try to be as healthy as possible. The United States has had problems with keeping its fitness level up, but there are so many ways to be active that it should be a crime not to have a healthy lifestyle. Laziness can sometimes overpower a person but making an effort to be healthy in the fitness department is a very good investment in the long run.
